River Road

Fire & Blood

The River Road was one of the principal routes included in Jaehaerys’s extensive road-building program. Its place in that project reflects the king’s effort to turn scattered, often rough tracks into more reliable roads connecting the regions of the Seven Kingdoms.

Place in the Road-Building Program

As 62 AC drew to a close, Jaehaerys looked beyond improvements to King’s Landing and planned roads across the wider realm. The program began in the Red Keep’s council chambers and continued through the rest of his reign and into that of his successor. The River Road was named among the major routes that followed the kingsroad: the roseroad, the ocean road, the river road, and the goldroad.

Improvement and Construction

Jaehaerys’s road work combined the repair of existing routes with the creation of new ones. Some of the roads in the program had already existed for centuries in rougher forms; his workers remade routes by filling ruts, spreading gravel, and bridging streams, while building other roads anew. The account identifies the River Road as part of this program but does not specify which particular improvements were made to it or describe its exact course.

Significance

The River Road’s significance lies in its inclusion in a sustained effort to make the realm more connected by land. The undertaking required work over many years and leagues, rather than a single royal decree producing an immediate network. Its larger political legacy is captured by the inscription on Jaehaerys’s monument at the Citadel of Oldtown: he bound the land together and made seven kingdoms one.
